Garden Inspirations

With Protea plants, the options are endless. Proteas look great in any garden, from seaside and coastal areas to rocky terrains. Some Proteas are ideal as potted plants, and others make fabulous hedges and some provide excellent shelter from the winds.

Rockeries, Hedges & Windbreaks
Due to their tough nature, many varieties of Protea grow particularly well in rockeries. 'Mini King', 'Joey', 'Fireglow', 'Scarlet Ribbon' and 'Sugar n Spice' to name a few. As long as soil, sunlight, water and drainage conditions are met, your Proteas should grow well.

Some banksias and waratahs are ideally suited for growing as hedges and borders. Shady Lady® 'Series' waratahs can be grown forming hedges up to about 3 metres high. Banksia 'Birthday Candles' makes excellent low growing hedges to about 50cm high. Taller, denser Proteas make excellent windbreaks. Look for those varieties that grow to approximately 3 metres high such as aurea, 'White Ruby', reflexum, and all telopea.

Seaside/Coastal Areas
Many Proteas occur naturally just a few kilometres from the sea. Check out our full variety listing for those more suited to this area.

Potted Plants
Many Proteas will be just as happy in a tub or pot as they would be in the garden. These include 'Red Devil', 'Mini King', cordifolium, 'Scarlet Ribbon', 'Birthday Candles', 'Blushing Bride', 'Sugar n Spice', 'Carmen', 'Corringle Gold' and 'Inca Gold'. Flower Arranging

Proteas, Leucadendron, Leucospermum, Banksias, Serrurias and Waratahs all look wonderful in flower arrangements. From the delicate 'Blushing Bride' to the bright colour of 'Inca Gold' and 'Safari Sunset', Proteas are used in bridal bouquets, floral tributes, and more. Proteas are often featured in flower and garden shows in prize winning displays.
